Are PlayStation 4 Consoles Still Being Sold? Your Complete Guide

The roar of the PlayStation 5 has been echoing through the gaming world for a few years now, with its lightning-fast SSD and next-generation graphics. But amidst the hype for the new, a persistent question remains for millions of gamers: what about its legendary predecessor? Are PlayStation 4 consoles still being sold?

The short answer is a resounding yes, but the landscape has changed significantly. While the PS4 is no longer the star of the show on major retail shelves, it has entered a new and exciting phase of its life.

For gamers, collectors, and anyone looking for incredible value, this is fantastic news. Let's dive deep into the current state of the PlayStation 4 market and explore why this console is far from being a museum piece.

The Official Status: The End of an Era

First, let's get the official business out of the way. Sony has largely ceased production of new PlayStation 4 consoles. By the end of 2020, the company had officially discontinued most models, including the PS4 Pro, in many regions to focus manufacturing efforts on the hard-to-find PS5.

You might, on a rare occasion, find a brand-new, sealed PS4 bundle tucked away in a warehouse or on a store shelf, but this is the exception, not the rule. These "new old stock" consoles are becoming collector's items in their own right.

So, if Sony isn't making them, where are they all coming from?

Where to Find a PlayStation 4 Today

The PS4 has gracefully transitioned from the primary market to the secondary market. This is where the real action is, and it’s a haven for savvy buyers.

The Pre-Owned Paradise

This is the most common and often best way to acquire a PS4. The console sold over 117 million units worldwide, meaning there is a massive and healthy supply of pre-owned systems. You can find them at:

• Specialist Retro Game Stores: Your best bet for quality and peace of mind. Stores like us here at RetroBroker live and breathe gaming history. We test, clean, and verify every console we sell, ensuring you get a reliable machine ready for years of play.
• Online Marketplaces: General marketplaces are flooded with PS4s, but buyer beware. The quality can vary wildly, and you're often buying "as is" with little to no guarantee.
• Pawn Shops and Local Sellers: A viable option if you're comfortable testing the console yourself before handing over your cash.

The Refurbished Route

A refurbished PS4 is a fantastic middle ground. These are pre-owned consoles that have been professionally inspected, repaired (if necessary), and restored to full working order. They often come with a limited warranty, giving you an extra layer of confidence in your purchase. This is an excellent way to get a like-new experience without the brand-new price tag.

Is Buying a PS4 Still Worth It? Absolutely.

Now for the most important question. With the PS5 available, is a PS4 still a worthwhile investment? For a huge number of people, the answer is a definite yes. Here’s why.

1. The Mind-Blowing Game Library

This is the PS4's trump card. Its game library isn't just big; it's one of the greatest in the history of video games. You gain instant access to a treasure trove of critically acclaimed masterpieces, including:

• Genre-Defining Exclusives: God of War (2018), The Last of Us Part II, Marvel's Spider-Man, Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima.
• Iconic Third-Party Blockbusters: Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Grand Theft Auto V, and countless others that run beautifully on the hardware.

Many of these games are now available at a fraction of their original launch price, allowing you to build an incredible collection on a budget.

2. Unbeatable Value for Money

You can get a complete PS4 setup—console, controller, and a stack of award-winning games—for less than the price of a new PS5 console alone. For families, students, or anyone looking to maximize their gaming budget, the PS4 offers unbeatable bang for your buck.

3. It’s Still a Modern, Connected Console

Don't mistake "last-gen" for "obsolete." The PS4 is still fully supported by the PlayStation Network. You can:

• Play online multiplayer with friends.
• Access the PlayStation Store to buy digital games and DLC.
• Use streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, and Disney+.
• Enjoy a Blu-ray player for your movie collection.

Choosing Your PS4: Original, Slim, or Pro?

When you start shopping, you'll see three main models. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you choose.

• The Original PS4 (2013): The classic workhorse. It's the largest and oldest model, but it's a reliable machine that plays every game in the library. A great budget-friendly starting point.
• The PS4 Slim (2016): A refined version of the original. It's smaller, sleeker, quieter, and more energy-efficient. For most people, the Slim is the perfect balance of performance and design.
• The PS4 Pro (2016): The powerhouse of the family. The Pro offers enhanced performance, faster frame rates in some games, and the ability to output at 4K resolution (often through upscaling). If you have a 4K TV and want the absolute best visual experience the PS4 can offer, the Pro is the one for you.

The Final Verdict: The PS4's Golden Age is Now

So, are PlayStation 4s still being sold? Yes, and they're thriving in a new role. The PS4 has officially entered its golden age as a "retro" console—a system with a legendary, complete library that is now more accessible and affordable than ever before.

It’s the perfect entry point for new gamers, a nostalgic treasure for seasoned players, and a smart purchase for anyone who appreciates a library filled with some of the best games ever made. The production lines may have stopped, but the fun is just getting started.
