Authentic Retro Games - Tested & Verified | RetroBroker

At RetroBroker, We Test Every Game and Check for Authenticity

For any retro game enthusiast, there's nothing quite like the thrill of holding a classic cartridge in your hands, the anticipation of slotting it into your console, and the flood of nostalgia as those familiar 8-bit or 16-bit tunes fill the room. But that feeling can quickly turn to disappointment if the game doesn't work, or worse, turns out to be a reproduction.

At RetroBroker, we understand this deeply. We're not just selling retro games; we're selling memories, experiences, and a connection to a golden age of gaming. That's why we go above and beyond to ensure that every single game we sell is authentic and in full working order. We're committed to providing you with the genuine article, ready to transport you back in time.

Our Rigorous Testing and Authentication Process

Our commitment to authenticity and quality starts with a thorough, multi-step process. Here's a breakdown of how we ensure every game meets our high standards:

1. Visual Inspection:

The journey begins with a meticulous visual inspection. We examine the cartridge or disc for any telltale signs of damage, wear and tear, or potential tampering. This includes:

• Label Condition: We check for fading, tears, peeling, or bubbling on the label. Authentic labels typically have specific textures, fonts, and color saturation that we're trained to recognize.
• Cartridge Shell: We look for cracks, chips, or discoloration on the plastic shell. We also examine the screws – are they the correct type for the console and region? Are there any signs of forced entry or tampering?
• Board Inspection (where applicable): For cartridge-based games, we carefully open the cartridge (using the correct tools to avoid damage) and visually inspect the printed circuit board (PCB).

2. PCB Verification (For Cartridge Games):

This is a crucial step in identifying reproductions. We compare the PCB to known authentic versions, looking for:

• Chip Markings: Authentic game boards use specific chips with identifiable markings and manufacturers. We cross-reference these markings with databases of known authentic games.
• Board Layout: The layout of the components on the PCB is often unique to each game. We compare the layout to verified authentic examples.
• Manufacturing Codes: Many authentic PCBs have manufacturing codes or date stamps that can help verify their authenticity.
• EPROM vs. Mask ROM: We determine if the game uses an EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) chip or a Mask ROM. Reproduction cartridges often use EPROMs, while original games typically use Mask ROMs (though there are some legitimate exceptions).

3. Gameplay Testing:

Once a game passes the visual and internal inspection, we move on to the most important test: gameplay. We don't just boot the game up and check if it starts; we play it. Our testing process includes:

• Full Boot-Up: We ensure the game boots correctly and displays the title screen without any glitches or errors.
• Extended Gameplay: We play through a significant portion of the game, testing various levels, features, and game mechanics.
• Save Functionality (if applicable): We test the game's save feature to ensure it saves and loads data correctly. This is particularly important for RPGs and other games with extensive save features.
• Sound and Graphics: We listen for any audio distortions or glitches and watch for any graphical anomalies.
• Controller Responsiveness: We test the game with original controllers to ensure all buttons and inputs are responsive.

4. Regional Compatibility:

We also verify the game's region compatibility. We ensure that the game is correctly labeled for its intended region (NTSC, PAL, etc.) and that it functions properly on consoles from that region.

5. Cleaning and Restoration (When Needed):

If a game passes all of our tests but has some minor cosmetic issues (e.g., dirty contacts, minor label wear), we carefully clean and restore it to the best possible condition. We use specialized cleaning solutions and techniques to avoid damaging the game. We never use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

Why Authenticity Matters

The retro gaming market is unfortunately flooded with reproductions, bootlegs, and counterfeit games. These fake games not only devalue the market but also often provide a subpar gaming experience. They may have:

• Poor Quality Components: Leading to glitches, crashes, or even damage to your console.
• Incorrect ROM Data: Resulting in altered gameplay, missing features, or even unplayable sections.
• No Save Functionality: Making it impossible to save your progress.
• Low Resale Value: Reproductions are worth significantly less than authentic games.

By purchasing from RetroBroker, you're investing in a genuine piece of gaming history. You're getting a game that has been thoroughly vetted and verified, ensuring that you receive the authentic experience the developers intended.
