How to Spot a Fake SNES Cartridge: 7 Warning Signs

Buying a coveted classic for your Super Nintendo Entertainment System only to discover a cheap modern board inside is a rite of passage every collector wants to avoid. Knowing how to spot a fake SNES cartridge before you hand over your money—or immediately after the parcel arrives—saves you from overpaying for worthless bootlegs and protects your console from poorly manufactured circuit boards. Because most online guides focus exclusively on boxy North American cartridges, we have built this checklist specifically around European PAL games, covering regional codes, curvy shell moulds, and sophisticated "donor" conversions.

1. The Shell Mould, Texture, and Screw Type

The fastest way to catch counterfeit Super Nintendo games is by examining the plastic casing itself. While North American NTSC-U cartridges use a tall, rectangular, blocky shell with a flat top label, European PAL releases share the curved, ergonomic shell design introduced by the Japanese Super Famicom. Very cheap PAL bootlegs occasionally arrive in boxy US-style shells with a PAL label slapped on the front, which is an instant giveaway.

Even when counterfeiters use the correct curved PAL mould, the plastic quality betrays them. Authentic Nintendo shells are injection-moulded from high-grade ABS plastic with a distinct, slightly grainy matte texture across the main body and a smooth recessed area for the label. A typical SNES reproduction cartridge feels overly smooth, almost soapy or greasy to the touch, and often shows rough plastic flash along the side seams where the two halves meet.

Turn the cartridge over and check the moulded Nintendo logo at the top of the back shell. To get past customs inspections, bulk shell manufacturers in Asia frequently leave this rectangular recess completely blank, or they mould a distorted logo where the lowercase "o" in Nintendo is round rather than narrow and flat-sided.

Finally, inspect the two screws holding the shell together:

• Authentic cartridges use two 3.8mm metallic Gamebit security screws with a muted, brushed steel or dark zinc finish and slightly rounded crown petals.
• Early 1990s bootlegs sometimes use moulded plastic tabs or standard Phillips-head screws.
• Modern reproductions either use cheap plastic snap-together shells with no screws at all, or bright, chrome-plated Gamebit screws with sharp, poorly machined edges that snag your fingernail.

2. Front Label Print Quality and Regional Codes

A thorough SNES cartridge label check requires looking closely at both the print methodology and the regional serial codes. Every authentic PAL SNES cartridge carries a specific alphanumeric code printed along the bottom or side edge of the front label, always beginning with SNSP (Super Nintendo System PAL).

This prefix is followed by a two-to-four-character game ID and a three-letter regional suffix indicating where the game was distributed and what language the label and manual use:

• SNSP-xxxx-UKV: United Kingdom (English text, often carrying a green VRC or ELSPA age rating on later releases).
• SNSP-xxxx-NOE: Nintendo of Europe, distributed in Germany (German text on the spine and warning lines).
• SNSP-xxxx-FAH: France and Holland (French/Dutch text).
• SNSP-xxxx-EUR: General European release (usually English text, distributed across multiple smaller territories).
• SNSP-xxxx-ESP / ITA / SCN: Spain, Italy, and Scandinavia respectively.

Counterfeiters making fake SNES games rarely understand European regional suffixes. You will frequently see a reproduction of a German-language RPG carrying a UKV code, or even worse, an American SNS-xxxx-USA code printed on a curved PAL label.

Next, inspect the physical printing and lamination. Original 1990s labels were produced on industrial offset printing presses and finished with a thin, durable protective laminate that develops subtle micro-scratches and slight edge yellowing over thirty years. If you examine an authentic label under a jeweller's loupe or your phone's macro camera, the artwork is made up of tiny, uniform CMYK rosette dot patterns, while the solid black text (such as "MADE IN JAPAN" or the regional code) is printed as a separate, razor-sharp solid black layer over the top.

Reproduction labels are usually printed on modern inkjet or colour laser printers. Under magnification, the tiny copyright text looks fuzzy, pixelated, or shows horizontal print-head banding. The finish is either blindingly glossy from thick modern vinyl sticker stock, or completely unlaminated matte paper that absorbs moisture and bleeds ink when rubbed. Look closely at the corners, too: original die-cut labels sit neatly inside the recessed plastic border with uniform spacing, whereas hand-cut or poorly templated fakes have uneven margins or corner radii that do not match the shell's curve.

3. The Embossed Back Label Factory Stamp

Understanding how to spot a fake SNES cartridge also means turning the game over to examine the grey rear caution label. Aside from matching the front label's regional language (a German NOE front label should generally pair with a German or multilingual European back label), every genuine cartridge carries a physical factory stamp.

During assembly at Nintendo's plants, a mechanical die pressed a two-digit number—and occasionally a single letter for later software revisions, such as 12 or 20A—directly into the paper of the rear label before or after application. This stamp contains no ink; it is an physical indentation in the sticker and the plastic beneath it.

To find it, hold the cartridge up to a desk lamp or window and tilt it slowly until the light catches the surface at a shallow angle. The two stamped digits usually sit on the right-hand side of the rear label, though they can appear slightly off-centre. Modern counterfeit back labels are completely flat and lack this indentation entirely.

However, never rely on the back stamp alone. Savvy scammers know collectors look for this detail, leading to the notorious "back-swap" trick. A seller will buy a crate of worthless, battered PAL sports games like Kick Off or Super Tennis for pennies, unscrew the authentic back shells—complete with genuine Nintendo logos, original 3.8mm screws, and real factory stamps—and attach them to a fake front shell housing a bootleg board of a rare game. Always cross-reference the back shell's wear and yellowing against the front half; if the back is yellowed and scratched while the front is factory-fresh, be suspicious.

4. Inspecting the Edge Connector Without Opening the Cart

If you are browsing a flea market or retro game convention without tools, you can still perform a quick visual check on the printed circuit board (PCB) by looking straight into the bottom slot of the cartridge.

Focus on the exposed edge of the fibreglass board where the gold contact pins sit:

1. Check the edge bevel: Genuine Nintendo PCBs have a smooth, machined 45-degree bevel (chamfer) along the bottom edge. This allows the board to part the tensioned metal pins inside the Super Nintendo console smoothly without snagging. Almost every cheap SNES reproduction cartridge uses a harsh, square-cut PCB edge that feels sharp to your finger and can scrape plating off—or physically bend—your console's cartridge slot over time.
2. Look at the substrate colour: Original Nintendo boards use a dark, slightly translucent olive-green fibreglass with dull gold contact fingers that almost always show faint vertical insertion marks down the centre. Modern bootleg boards frequently use bright emerald green, blue, red, or stark white solder masks with paper-thin, overly shiny gold fingers.
3. Count the pin banks for special chip games: Most standard games use the primary 46-pin central connector. However, titles that utilise internal enhancement chips—such as Starwing (Super FX), Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (Super FX2), Street Fighter Alpha 2 (S-DD1), or Mega Man X2 and Mega Man X3 (CX4)—require the extra 16 pins (8 on each side) flanking the main connector. If someone hands you a copy of Mega Man X3 with only the central pin bank populated, or with the side pins present but not connected to anything inside, it is a fake or a non-working conversion.

5. Opening the Shell: The Definitive PCB Check

For any cartridge above casual pocket-money value, an internal SNES PCB verification is mandatory. You will need a 3.8mm Gamebit screwdriver (note that the larger 4.5mm Gamebit bit is used for the Super Nintendo console shell itself, not the cartridges).

Place the cartridge face down on a soft cloth, insert the 3.8mm driver vertically into the two rear screws, and turn counter-clockwise. Once you have inspected the board and are ready to close the shell, always place the screw in the hole and turn it slightly counter-clockwise until you feel the thread drop with a soft click, then tighten clockwise. This seats the metal screw into the existing thread paths carved at the factory in the 1990s rather than cutting new threads and stripping the brittle plastic posts.

Once you lift the front shell away, look for these markers of authenticity on the PCB:

• The Nintendo silkscreen: Every original board (barring a tiny handful of third-party Acclaim or Electronic Arts boards that still carry clear manufacturer branding) features the official Nintendo logo and a year of manufacture printed in white ink directly onto the fibreglass, along with a board layout code like SHVC-1A0N-20 or SNSP-1J0N-10.
• Stamped Mask ROMs: The main game data lives on one or two rectangular black Mask ROM chips. On an authentic PAL SNES cartridge, the top of this chip is laser-etched or printed in silver/white ink with the exact four-character game code found on the front label. For example, an authentic PAL copy of Super Metroid (SNSP-RI-UKV) will have SNSP-RI-0 stamped directly onto the Mask ROM chip.
• No "glob tops" (with one rare exception): Cheap modern bootlegs almost always use Chip-on-Board (COB) construction, hiding tiny, fragile silicon dies underneath ugly round blobs of shiny black epoxy resin. Aside from the original Japanese and US Star Ocean or a tiny number of late-run puzzle games, standard retail PAL cartridges never use black epoxy blobs.
• 5V vs 3.3V architecture: Modern Chinese reproduction boards typically use contemporary 3.3V flash memory chips soldered onto a custom adapter board without voltage level shifters. Because the Super Nintendo supplies a full 5V to the cartridge slot, running unbuffered 3.3V chips forces the components out of specification, generating excess heat that can degrade both the bootleg cart and your console's internal voltage regulator.

6. Spotting 'Donor' Conversions and Re-Labels

Knowing how to spot a fake SNES cartridge gets noticeably harder when dealing with heavy hitters like Terranigma, Hagane: The Final Conflict, Demon's Crest, Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss, or Mega Man X3. Because buyers of high-end games always ask for PCB photos, counterfeiters rarely use obvious green glob-top boards from overseas marketplaces. Instead, they build "Frankenstein" donor conversions.

To make a donor conversion, a modder takes a genuine, low-value PAL cartridge that shares the exact same PCB layout and SRAM configuration as an expensive game—for example, sacrificing a cheap football management cartridge to mimic a pricey RPG. They desolder the original Mask ROM chip and solder a programmable EPROM chip flashed with the rare game's code onto the genuine Nintendo board.

Because the board still says Nintendo in white silkscreen and has bevelled gold pins, a casual glance might pass it off as real. Here is how to catch a donor conversion immediately:

• Look for quartz windows and tape: Vintage UV-erasable EPROM chips (like the 27C801 or 27C322) have a small circular quartz window in the centre showing the silicon die inside, usually covered by a piece of black electrical tape or a foil sticker to prevent light from erasing the game. Factory Nintendo Mask ROMs are solid black plastic with no windows and no stickers.
• Check for adapter boards and bodge wires: Because standard EPROM pinouts do not match Nintendo's proprietary Mask ROM pinouts, converters must either run a tangle of thin insulated jumper wires ("bodge wires") from the chip legs to the PCB holes, or solder the chip onto a small green daughterboard that sits elevated above the main PCB.
• Inspect the solder joints on the back: Flip the PCB over. Factory wave-soldering leaves uniform, slightly dull, cone-shaped solder joints across every pin on the board. If the joints on the main ROM chip look shiny, bulbous, burnt with brown flux residue, or misaligned compared to the CIC lockout chip next to it, the ROM has been swapped by hand.
• Check the save battery: Games that save progress (like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, or The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past) use a 3V CR2032 coin-cell battery with metal tabs spot-welded directly to the battery surfaces and soldered through the board. Original batteries usually carry a two-digit year and month stamp (such as 93-08). While a neatly replaced tabbed battery is normal maintenance on a thirty-year-old game, a clumsy plastic clip-in battery holder glued or glob-soldered onto the pads often accompanies a homemade board conversion.

7. Bonus for CIB Collectors: Fake Boxes and Manuals

As complete-in-box (CIB) PAL prices have climbed, reproduction cardboard boxes and manuals have flooded online marketplaces, often paired with a genuine loose cartridge to double or triple its value.

Because Super Nintendo games were sold in unsealed cardboard boxes across most of Europe, counterfeiters can easily print flat-pack replicas. To verify a PAL box and manual, inspect the construction details before looking at the artwork:

• Check the interior cardstock colour: Open the end flap and look inside the box. Genuine 1990s European Nintendo boxes were printed on recycled greyboard; the raw inside of the cardboard is a dull, fibrous matte grey or light brownish-grey. Almost all modern reproduction boxes are printed on virgin bleached cardstock that is bright, smooth white on the inside.
• Inspect the lock tabs and glue seams: Authentic PAL boxes use a clean die-cut template where the main side flaps have small, precise rectangular lock-tabs that tuck into matching slits on the dust flaps. Reproduction boxes often have rounded, poorly cut tabs, or show microscopic perforated teeth along the fold lines where they were popped out of a laser-cut sheet.
• Examine the manual staples and paper: Genuine instruction booklets use two metal staples down the spine that, after three decades, usually show slight oxidation or dullness, along with natural paper tension creases along the fold. Modern replica manuals are often printed on thick, glossy brochure paper, smell faintly of fresh toner, and exhibit a blurred halftone or Moiré crosshatch pattern over screenshots because they were scanned from an existing manual rather than printed from original film plates.

FAQ

Can a fake SNES cartridge damage my console?

Yes, many cheap reproduction cartridges can cause both mechanical and electrical wear. Their PCBs usually lack bevelled edges, which scrapes and bends the pins inside your console's cartridge slot, and they frequently use 3.3V flash chips inside a 5V system without voltage translation, putting extra electrical stress and heat onto your Super Nintendo's internal components.

What screwdriver do I need to open a Super Nintendo game?

You need a 3.8mm Gamebit security screwdriver to open an authentic SNES cartridge. If you also want to open the Super Nintendo console shell itself for cleaning or repair, you will need the slightly larger 4.5mm Gamebit screwdriver.

Are PAL SNES cartridges supposed to have glossy labels?

Unlike North American cartridges that switched to unlaminated labels late in the console's life, most authentic European PAL cartridges retained a smooth, semi-gloss protective laminate. Because of this, you should never judge a PAL game by glossiness alone; always check the offset print rosettes, the regional serial code, and the internal PCB.

How can I tell if a SNES game has a replacement label?

Replacement labels typically have slightly inaccurate corner curves that do not sit evenly inside the recessed plastic frame, blurry or pixelated text on the tiny copyright lines, and a total lack of age-related micro-scratches compared to the surrounding plastic shell. Opening the cartridge to verify that the Mask ROM code matches the label is the best way to be sure.

Conclusion

Learning how to spot a fake SNES cartridge comes down to combining external and internal checks rather than trusting a single detail. By verifying the curved PAL shell texture, matching the SNSP regional code on the label to the stamped code on the internal Mask ROM chip, and keeping a 3.8mm Gamebit screwdriver in your toolkit, you can immediately filter out both cheap imports and deceptive EPROM conversions. When you want to skip the guesswork, every Super Nintendo game we stock at RetroBroker is opened, PCB-verified for original Mask ROMs, and tested on original hardware before it ever reaches the site.
