PS2 Console Versions Explained: Fat vs. Slim & Model Guide | RetroBroker

Decoding the PS2 Alphabet Soup: A Guide to PlayStation 2 Console Versions

The PlayStation 2. A behemoth of a console, a titan of its time, and home to countless legendary games. But did you know that not all PS2s were created equal? Beneath the surface of that sleek black (or silver) exterior lies a surprising variety of models, each with its own quirks and characteristics. Whether you're a collector, a casual gamer, or just curious about retro gaming history, understanding the different PS2 versions is key to finding the perfect console for you. Here at RetroBroker, we're passionate about preserving gaming history, so let's dive into the fascinating world of PS2 console variations.

The Original "Fat" PS2: Models SCPH-10000 through SCPH-50000 Series

The original PlayStation 2, affectionately nicknamed the "fat" PS2, launched in 2000. These early models (SCPH-10000 through SCPH-39000) were large and heavy, featuring an internal power supply and an expansion bay for a hard drive (essential for some games like Final Fantasy XI). These models are highly sought after by collectors for their backwards compatibility with PS1 games, superior cooling, and overall robustness. Later "fat" models (SCPH-50000 series) retained the same general design but offered revisions like a slimmer internal power supply.

The Slimline Revolution: SCPH-70000 through SCPH-90000 Series

In 2004, Sony introduced the "slim" PS2, a drastically redesigned console that was smaller, lighter, and more affordable. These models (starting with the SCPH-70000 series) were a huge success, extending the PS2's lifespan considerably. The slim PS2 sacrificed the internal power supply for an external one and removed the expansion bay. While generally reliable, some later slim models (particularly the SCPH-90000 series) are known to have a higher failure rate with the disc read laser.

Key Differences and Considerations for Collectors and Gamers:

• Backwards Compatibility: The "fat" PS2 consoles generally offer the best backwards compatibility with PlayStation 1 games.
• Expansion Bay: Only the "fat" PS2 models have an internal expansion bay for a hard drive.
• Durability: While both models are generally robust, the "fat" PS2 is often considered more durable due to its more substantial construction and superior cooling.
• Modding: The "fat" PS2 is a popular choice for modding, allowing for enhancements like improved cooling and upgraded components.
• Price: Slim PS2 consoles are typically more affordable than their "fat" counterparts.

Identifying Your PS2 Model:

The model number of your PS2 is located on a sticker on the bottom of the console. It will begin with "SCPH" followed by a series of numbers. Knowing this number is essential for researching its specific features and potential issues.

Finding the Right PS2 for You:

Choosing the right PS2 depends on your individual needs. If you're a collector seeking the original experience with full backwards compatibility and the option for modding, a "fat" PS2 is the way to go. If you prioritize portability and affordability, a slim PS2 might be a better choice. Regardless of your preference, the PlayStation 2 remains an iconic console with a vast library of incredible games.
