Every Game Boy Model Ranked from Worst to Best for Buyers

Picking up an original Nintendo handheld today means choosing between nostalgia and actual usability. In this guide with every game boy model ranked from worst to best, we evaluate the entire line-up strictly on unmodded stock performance, screen visibility, battery logistics in Europe, backward compatibility, and common hardware failures. By the end, you will know exactly which model suits your hands, your eyes, and the specific cartridge library you want to collect.

Game Boy Hardware Specs and Compatibility Matrix

Before looking at individual consoles, you need to understand how Nintendo structured the cartridge generations across the Game Boy lifespan. Every cartridge carries a three-letter prefix stamped on the lower corner of its label, which tells you what hardware is required to run it:

• DMG (Dot Matrix Game): Original grey cartridges designed for the 1989 Game Boy. They play in monochrome or basic colour palettes on newer systems.
• CGB (Color Game Boy): These split into two distinct types. Black cartridges (dual-mode) feature enhanced colour palettes on a Game Boy Color or Advance, yet remain backward-compatible with older monochrome systems. Clear convex cartridges lack the top corner notch and only boot on a Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance.
• AGB (Advance Game Boy): Half-height 32-bit cartridges that only fit and run in the Game Boy Advance family of systems.

One huge advantage for collectors in PAL territories is that every Game Boy console and cartridge is 100% region-free. Whether you buy a European cartridge stamped with EUR, NOE, or UKV, a North American USA copy, or a Japanese JPN import, it will boot natively on any compatible Game Boy hardware without adapters or regional lockouts. Because the screens generate their own refresh rate independent of PAL or NTSC television standards, all games run at the exact same speed worldwide.

Here is how the seven official hardware models compare when you have every game boy model ranked side by side:

7. Original Game Boy (DMG-01): Iconic Brick, Terrible Screen

The 1989 DMG-01 (and its later painted "Play It Loud!" variants) is a towering piece of industrial history, but it ranks dead last as an unmodded player's console today. The culprit is its passive-matrix STN (Super Twisted Nematic) reflective liquid crystal display. Even under bright direct light, the pea-soup green screen suffers from severe motion blur and ghosting. Fast-scrolling platformers like Super Mario Land 2 or Donkey Kong Land turn into an indistinct smear whenever your character runs, forcing you to constantly tweak the side contrast dial as the screen warms up.

Where the original brick still shines is build durability, ergonomics for large hands, and audio performance. Powered by four standard AA batteries that deliver well over twenty hours of play, the thick ABS shell absorbs drops that would shatter modern electronics. Furthermore, the DMG-01 houses the loudest, bass-heaviest mono speaker in the family, and its 3.5mm stereo headphone jack pumps out remarkably clean audio—which is why chiptune musicians still prize it.

When inspecting a second-hand DMG-01, look closely at the edges of the display while a game is running:

• Missing vertical lines: Extremely common. The adhesive and solder holding the ribbon cable below the screen degrade over decades. Fortunately, you or a repair shop can easily fix this by gently heating the strip below the glass with a soldering iron to reflow the existing connections.
• Missing horizontal lines: Walk away unless the console is priced for parts. The horizontal ribbon runs along the side of the glass at a microscopic pitch and is practically impossible to repair reliably without destroying the LCD.

6. Game Boy Micro (OXY-001): Premium Build with Major Compromises

Released at the very end of the Advance era, the Game Boy Micro (OXY-001) is the sleekest handheld Nintendo ever produced, wrapped in an anodised aluminium body that slips effortlessly into a coin pocket. Its 2.0-inch screen packs the exact same 240x160 pixel resolution as the full-sized GBA into a much smaller physical space, yielding razor-sharp pixel density and five levels of vibrant backlit brightness (controlled by holding L and pressing the volume rocker). It also brings back the standard 3.5mm headphone jack that the SP removed.

So why does it sit near the bottom when looking at every game boy model ranked for buyers? First, game boy micro compatibility is heavily restricted. To shrink the motherboard, Nintendo stripped out the dual-voltage regulator and the Z80-based coprocessor completely. As a result, the OXY-001 only plays Game Boy Advance (AGB) cartridges; original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges will not even physically lock into the slot. Second, the tiny screen makes RPG text and dense menus exhausting to read for long sessions.

Buyers also need to watch out for two physical weak points on the OXY-001:

1. Brittle internal frames: Beneath the metal exterior sits an internal plastic chassis that becomes extremely brittle with age. Simply unscrewing the battery cover to replace a tired OXY-003 battery can snap the tiny plastic screw posts inside.
2. Faceplates and chargers: The removable front faceplates scratch easily, and the tiny retention clips holding them flush to the body frequently snap. You also need a Micro-specific charger (OXY-002), as it does not share a charging port with the GBA SP or Nintendo DS.

5. Game Boy Pocket (MGB-001): Sharp Monochrome, Weak Batteries

If you strictly want to play original monochrome cartridges without modifying hardware, the Game Boy Pocket (MGB-001) is a massive leap forward from the original brick. Nintendo replaced the blurry green STN panel with an FSTN (Film compensated Super Twisted Nematic) screen. The result is a larger, noticeably sharper, true black-and-white image with far better viewing angles and dramatically reduced ghosting.

However, comparing the game boy pocket vs color or original DMG reveals a major engineering compromise: the power circuit. By shrinking the battery bay down to two AAA batteries, Nintendo cut battery life to roughly eight hours and pushed the internal DC-DC voltage regulator to its limit. You will notice the screen contrast dipping and pulsing in rhythm with the game music or when the red battery LED turns on. If you plan to use a modern flashcart like an EverDrive, the initial boot-up power spike will frequently cause a stock MGB-001 to reset or fail to load unless you use top-tier lithium AAA cells.

A quick tip for collectors browsing imports: the earliest Japanese production runs of the MGB-001 do not have a red battery indicator LED to the left of the screen. Later Japanese units and standard European releases added the LED so players would stop losing hours of Pokémon progress to sudden power loss. Also note that the Pocket introduced the smaller MGB-004 link cable port, which stayed standard through the Game Boy Color and Advance lines.

4. Game Boy Light (MGL-001): The Rare Japanese Import

Released exclusively in Japan in 1998 just months before the Game Boy Color arrived, the Game Boy Light (MGL-001) is essentially a slightly wider Game Boy Pocket that solves the biggest flaws of its sibling. Because all Game Boy hardware is region-free, this Japanese exclusive plays every European and North American monochrome cartridge right out of the box.

The MGL-001 improves on the Pocket in two critical ways:

• Built-in Electroluminescent (EL) Backlight: Switching the three-way power slider to the third position ignites a soft, uniform bluish-teal glow behind the FSTN monochrome screen. It is the only 8-bit Nintendo handheld you can play in a pitch-black bedroom without worm lights or magnifying attachments.
• AA Battery Power: Nintendo reverted from AAA back to two AA batteries. This provides up to twenty hours of play with the light off (around twelve with the light on) and completely eliminates the voltage instability and screen flickering that plague the Pocket.

Because the MGL-001 was only manufactured for a brief window, finding a clean loose or CIB (Complete in Box) unit takes patience. The standard Gold and Silver finishes are notorious for paint rub on the rear grips and corners, revealing dark grey plastic underneath. Always ask to see inside the battery compartment before buying—leaked alkaline AA batteries often corrode the battery door contact strip, which is difficult to source as a spare part in Europe.

3. Game Boy Color (CGB-001): Reliable Workhorse with a Dim Display

Moving into the top tier of nintendo handheld consoles ranked for everyday reliability, the Game Boy Color (CGB-001) hits a wonderful sweet spot. Its curved lower shell fits naturally into adult hands, and two standard AA batteries easily deliver twenty-five to thirty hours of runtime. In addition to running its own library of clear-shell exclusives like The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX and Pokémon Crystal, it adds colour palettes to older monochrome games and includes a top-mounted infrared (IR) sensor.

When comparing game boy pocket vs color screens, the CGB-001 trades screen size for speed. The slightly smaller 2.3-inch reflective TFT colour panel has zero motion blur—fast action looks crisp and immediate. The downside is that the colour filter layer eats up ambient light. You cannot play a stock Game Boy Color in a dimly lit room; you need to sit with a lamp or window directly over your shoulder hitting the glass at a 45-degree angle.

If you are inspecting a used CGB-001, test the audio thoroughly:

1. Turn the volume wheel all the way up and listen to the built-in speaker. If it sounds whisper-quiet or distorted, the console has a failing surface-mount 100uF electrolytic capacitor (C38 on the motherboard).
2. Plug in a pair of headphones. If sound still comes out of the main speaker, or if no sound comes out of the speaker once you unplug the headphones, the tiny metal switch contact inside the headphone jack is oxidised and needs cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.

2. Game Boy Advance (AGB-001): Best Ergonomics, Worst Lighting

If comfort and library size are your primary metrics for the best game boy model to buy, the original horizontal Game Boy Advance (AGB-001) is deeply compelling. By placing the controls to the left and right of the screen rather than cramped underneath it, Nintendo created a handheld that adults can hold for hours without wrist cramps. The big shoulder buttons (L and R) sit naturally under your index fingers, which is vital for action-heavy GBA games like Metroid Fusion or Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Under the hood, the AGB-001 contains both the 32-bit ARM processor for Advance games and the legacy 8-bit sharp Z80-style processor for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. A physical switch inside the cartridge slot detects the shape of the inserted cartridge and switches voltage and processors automatically. Even better, pressing L and R while playing an older 8-bit game lets you toggle between the original square aspect ratio and a stretched widescreen view.

The tragedy of the stock AGB-001 is its screen. Despite featuring gorgeous 32-bit graphics, the reflective TFT screen has no frontlight or backlight at all, and early launch games like Castlevania: Circle of the Moon used dark colour palettes that are almost invisible indoors. Because its ergonomics, AA battery bay, and built-in headphone jack are otherwise ideal, the AGB-001 has become the number-one platform for modern drop-in IPS backlit screen mods.

1. Game Boy Advance SP (AGS-001 & AGS-101): The Ultimate All-Rounder

Sitting at number one with every game boy model ranked is the clamshell Game Boy Advance SP. It plays almost every cartridge across all three Game Boy generations, folds shut to protect its screen from scratches in your bag, uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and—crucially—lets you see the screen in any lighting condition.

The Crucial Difference: Game Boy Advance SP AGS-001 vs AGS-101

Not all GBA SP consoles are created equal. In the game boy advance sp ags-001 vs ags-101 debate, the model code on the bottom serial sticker dictates the screen technology inside:

• AGS-001 (Frontlit): The standard model across Europe. An integrated light panel shines across the front of the reflective screen. Colours look somewhat washed out with a slight bluish-white haze, and pressing the top brightness button toggles the light completely ON or OFF. The upside is that with the light turned off, the AGS-001 remains completely readable in bright outdoor sunlight.
• AGS-101 (Backlit): Released late in the console's lifecycle, this revision features a true transmissive backlit LCD like a modern smartphone. Blacks are deep, colours pop with incredible saturation, and pressing the brightness button switches between Normal and High brightness (the light never turns fully off). In Europe, the AGS-101 had a much smaller release than in North America; you will mostly find it in specific late-run boxes stamped "Features a BRIGHTER backlit screen!", most notably in Surf Blue, Pink, and certain Tribal editions.

You can instantly tell the two screens apart even when the console is switched off: an AGS-001 screen looks light slate-grey in the light, whereas an AGS-101 screen looks pitch black.

Downsides and How to Spot Reshelled Consoles

The SP is not without minor flaws. Its narrow square footprint cramps big hands during heavy shoulder-button use, the switches beneath the L and R triggers often collect dust and stop registering presses until cleaned, and there is no 3.5mm headphone jack (you must buy a cheap clip-on adapter that plugs into the top charging port). European buyers should also grab a cheap USB-to-GBA-SP charging cable rather than relying on bulky twenty-year-old wall bricks.

Because scratched SP consoles are so common, the market is flooded with cheap aftermarket replacement shells (reshells) sold as "mint original" units. Here is how to verify an authentic Nintendo shell before paying a premium:

• Speaker holes: Original Nintendo shells have four small, clean central speaker holes surrounded by twelve noticeably larger outer holes. Cheap reproduction shells often have uneven hole sizes or plastic flashing inside the holes.
• Button and hinge feel: Original hinges snap decisively into a locked viewing angle with zero wobble. Reshells often reuse worn hinges or cheap clones that feel gritty and loose.
• Stickers and logos: Check the back barcode sticker for fuzzy text, misspellings, or generic serial numbers duplicated across thousands of fake labels. On the inside beneath the screen, the silver Game Boy Advance SP logo should be crisp, metallic, and dead straight.

FAQ

Which Game Boy model plays all Game Boy games?

Both the original horizontal Game Boy Advance (AGB-001) and the clamshell Game Boy Advance SP (AGS-001 and AGS-101) can play original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. The Game Boy Micro (OXY-001) lacks the internal hardware for backward compatibility and only plays Game Boy Advance games.

Are Game Boy consoles and games region locked in Europe?

No, every console and cartridge across the entire Game Boy family is completely region-free. You can play Japanese (JPN) and North American (USA) cartridges on a European (EUR) Game Boy without any adapters, modifications, or speed differences.

How can I tell the difference between a GBA SP AGS-001 and AGS-101?

Check the model number printed on the rear barcode sticker, look at the unlit screen (grey for AGS-001, deep black for AGS-101), and press the brightness button while powered on. On an AGS-001, the button turns the frontlight completely off; on an AGS-101, it toggles between low and high backlight brightness.

Why does my Game Boy Advance SP battery not hold a charge?

Original AGS-003 lithium-ion batteries are now over twenty years old and have naturally lost capacity or begun to swell. You can easily replace the battery in two minutes by undoing the single Phillips screw on the bottom battery door and dropping in a fresh replacement cell.

Choosing Your Ideal Handheld
