Which GTA Games to Play Before GTA 6: A Retro Guide

With the highly anticipated return to the sun-soaked streets of Leonida, many fans are wondering exactly which GTA games to play before GTA 6. Revisiting the foundational titles on original hardware offers an incredible perspective on how Rockstar shaped the modern open-world genre. You will walk away from this guide knowing exactly which retro entries to hunt down, how to identify truly complete physical copies, and the best classic hardware to play them on today.

Returning to Leonida: Which GTA Games to Play Before GTA 6

GTA 6 brings us back to the Vice City area, making the classic era an absolute priority. The 2002 original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and its 2006 prequel Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories are essential for understanding the neon-drenched history of the setting. Cruising down Ocean Beach while listening to V-Rock or Flash FM remains a defining gaming memory. Playing these titles lets you spot the inevitable easter eggs, recurring families, and geographical references that Rockstar is famous for hiding in their modern maps.

When looking at GTA Vice City PAL PS2 copies, it is important to understand the technical limitations of the era. The original European PS2 release ran at 50Hz, meaning the gameplay is approximately 16.7% slower than the North American NTSC release, and it features noticeable black borders at the top and bottom of the screen. For a smoother experience in the PAL region, the original Xbox port of Vice City offers improved frame rates, custom soundtrack support, and better overall performance.

Collectors should note that playing Vice City Stories original hardware releases—whether on the PSP (2006) or the PS2 port (2007)—is the only official way to experience the prequel. Due to complex licensing, it was never officially ported to PC or modern digital consoles. For either game, a complete physical copy must include the iconic tourist map and the instruction manual. These physical extras are highly sought after by collectors and remain absolutely vital for achieving true CIB status.

The Origin of the 3D Era: Grand Theft Auto III

Before you can fully appreciate modern mechanics, you have to look at where the 3D blueprint began. Released in 2001, Grand Theft Auto III established the open-world formula that Rockstar still relies on today. Navigating the dark, foggy streets of Liberty City across Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale serves as a crucial history lesson in game design. It shows the massive leap from top-down arcade action to a fully realised living city with emergent AI behaviour.

There are distinct differences between the standalone PS2 original and the Xbox Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack (which included GTA III and Vice City). The Xbox version boasts significantly improved textures, better vehicle models, and the highly praised ability to rip your own CDs to the hard drive for a custom radio station. If you have an original Xbox, this is widely considered the definitive retro console version to own.

If you are hunting for early PS2 copies, you must be incredibly careful with the physical discs. Early European prints of Grand Theft Auto III were pressed on blue-bottom CD-ROMs rather than standard silver DVDs. These blue discs are notoriously fragile, prone to read errors, and much more difficult to safely resurface if they sustain deep scratches. Always verify the underside of the disc is clean before adding it to your GTA 3D universe games collection.

Expanding the Scope: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Released in 2004, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas introduced RPG mechanics, deep character customisation, and a massive map scale featuring three distinct cities: Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas. Taking control of CJ and engaging in turf wars or flying jets across the sweeping countryside showcased an ambitious scope that heavily influenced modern titles. It gives you a taste of the sprawling world design we expect in the upcoming sequel, making it one of the most important titles to consider when deciding which GTA games to play before GTA 6.

We strongly advise collectors to track down the original PS2 or Xbox print runs to experience the legendary soundtrack exactly as intended. Due to expired music licensing, later re-releases, the Xbox 360 port, and modern digital versions had iconic tracks completely removed. Holding onto an original 2004 physical copy is the only legal way to ensure your radio stations remain untouched.

When checking for GTA maps and posters completeness, pay special attention to San Andreas. Because the map is significantly larger than previous entries, it requires more complex folds to fit inside a standard DVD case. Consequently, this specific map often suffers from heavy wear, tearing, or splitting along the fold lines. Finding a pristine map is a hallmark of a well-preserved collection.

The HD Universe Shift: Grand Theft Auto IV

With the launch of the PS3 and Xbox 360, Rockstar rebooted their timeline into the "HD Universe," leaving the 3D era behind. Grand Theft Auto IV introduced the revolutionary Euphoria physics engine, providing incredibly realistic driving and hand-to-hand combat mechanics. Its darker, grounded narrative directly precedes the modern era of GTA 5, making it an essential stepping stone.

For the best physical experience, we highly recommend hunting down the GTA 4 complete edition PS3 or Xbox 360 release. This specific retail version includes the base game alongside both Episodes from Liberty City DLCs (The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony) entirely on the disc. You get the full Liberty City story without relying on digital storefronts, server downloads, or account tie-ins, which is vital for long-term game preservation.

European collectors have excellent options for this title. All PS3 discs, including PAL releases, are naturally region-free, meaning you can play any copy from around the world on your local console. While Xbox 360 games are usually region-locked, the standard and Complete Edition copies of Grand Theft Auto IV are famously region-free, making either platform a fantastic choice for building your shelf.

Hardware Compatibility: Which GTA Games to Play Before GTA 6

Playing these classic PAL discs today without relying on modern emulation requires an understanding of original hardware longevity. To truly appreciate which GTA games to play before GTA 6, you need the right setup. The original PS2 and Xbox consoles offer the most authentic experience, complete with analogue face buttons and CRT television compatibility. For the best visual output on original hardware, we recommend tracking down high-quality RGB SCART or component cables rather than relying on standard composite leads.

If you prefer using a PS3 to play PS2 discs, you must find a very specific backward-compatible model. In Europe, the primary backward-compatible PS3 is the CECHC04 model. Unlike the North American launch models that contained actual PS2 hardware chips, the CECHC04 relies on software emulation. This means while it upscales beautifully via HDMI, a few minor graphical glitches can occasionally occur in demanding PS2 open-world games.

Below is a compatibility matrix to help you match your European physical copies of GTA 3D universe games with the correct hardware:

Spotting Complete-in-Box (CIB) GTA Copies

Building a collection of Grand Theft Auto collector's editions and standard releases requires knowing exactly what belongs inside the case. A true Complete-in-Box (CIB) retro GTA game is not just a disc and a manual. Every mainline PS2 and original Xbox GTA title included a thick instruction booklet and a large fold-out map that doubles as a poster of the city.

To ensure your retro game is genuinely complete, follow this checklist when inspecting a physical copy:

• Match the Disc Art: Ensure the disc matches the case. Unscrupulous sellers often place silver Platinum (PS2) or Xbox Classics discs inside standard black-label cases. A true black-label release will have full-colour disc artwork.
• Check the Manual: The manual should match the region code on the back of the box (e.g., SLES or BLES numbers for European copies).
• Verify the Map: The game must include the specific fold-out map poster for that city, which is usually double-sided with character artwork on the back.

Because of the focus on GTA maps and posters completeness, you must also be able to spot reproduction maps. Original Rockstar maps were printed with a specific semi-gloss finish and retain a crisp "fold memory" from decades of sitting tightly inside a case. Reproduction maps often feel like standard printer paper, lack the glossy sheen, and have soft, newly creased folds. Always ask for clear photos of the map's texture before buying.

FAQ

Do I need to play older GTA games before GTA 6?

While GTA 6 will undoubtedly feature a standalone story that welcomes newcomers, playing older titles helps you appreciate the evolution of Rockstar's open-world mechanics. You will also be much more likely to catch references, returning factions, and geographical nods to past games, especially Vice City.

Are European PS2 GTA games locked to 50Hz?

Yes, early PS2 PAL releases like Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City are locked to 50Hz. This means they run slightly slower than their 60Hz NTSC counterparts and feature black borders at the top and bottom of the screen. Later Xbox ports and the PC versions offer full-speed gameplay for European players.

What makes a retro GTA game complete in box?

A true CIB copy must include the original plastic case, the matching game disc (avoiding Platinum or Classics mismatches), the original instruction manual, and the specific fold-out map poster for that city. Missing the map means the game is only considered "boxed," not complete.

Which version of GTA IV is best for collectors?

The Complete Edition for PS3 or Xbox 360 is highly recommended. It includes the base game alongside The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony expansions entirely on the disc, ensuring you have the complete HD Liberty City experience without needing digital downloads.
