How Many People Are Still Playing PS4 in 2024? The Surprising Numbers

The PS4's Enduring Legacy: Just How Many People Are Still Playing in 2024?

The PlayStation 5 is in full swing, dazzling gamers with its lightning-fast load times and next-generation exclusives. Yet, a shadow looms large in the gaming landscape—a familiar, rectangular shadow that over 117 million people invited into their homes. We're talking, of course, about the PlayStation 4.

Years after its successor's launch, a question echoes in gaming forums and online discussions: is anyone still using the PS4? Is it a ghost town of abandoned servers and dusty digital libraries?

The answer is a resounding, and perhaps surprising, no. The PlayStation 4 isn't just surviving; in many ways, it's still thriving. Let's dive into the numbers, the reasons, and what this means for the future of this legendary console.

The Official Numbers: A Tale of Two Consoles

Sony's official reports provide the most concrete data, though they require a bit of interpretation. The key metric Sony uses is "PlayStation Network Monthly Active Users" (MAUs). This number represents the total count of unique accounts that sign in and engage with the PlayStation Network—whether that's playing a game, using an app, or browsing the store—within a month.

As of early 2024, Sony reported well over 100 million MAUs. Now, this figure combines both PS4 and PS5 users. While Sony doesn't provide a precise breakdown, we can make some very strong inferences. With a final install base of over 117 million PS4s sold worldwide compared to the PS5's growing but still smaller number, it's mathematically certain that a massive portion—likely a majority—of these active users are still on the PlayStation 4.

Tens of millions of gamers are still firing up their PS4s every single day. This isn't a forgotten relic; it's a bustling metropolis of active players.

Why is the PS4 Still So Wildly Popular?

The console's incredible staying power isn't an accident. It's the result of several key factors that have created the perfect storm for longevity.

1. The Staggering Game Library

This is the number one reason. The PlayStation 4 is home to one of the most celebrated and expansive game libraries in history. For over a decade, it was the go-to platform for genre-defining masterpieces. Think about it:

• Epic Single-Player Adventures: God of War (2018), The Last of Us Part II, Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel's Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, and Bloodborne.
• Legendary Third-Party Support: An endless stream of hits like Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Grand Theft Auto V, and the entire Dark Souls trilogy.
• Thriving Online Communities: The PS4 is still a primary platform for mega-hits like Call of Duty: Warzone, Fortnite, Apex Legends, and EA Sports FC. These games maintain huge player bases on the older hardware.

For someone just entering the PlayStation ecosystem, the PS4 offers a nearly bottomless well of critically acclaimed, affordable games.

2. The Cross-Generation Bridge

The transition from PS4 to PS5 was unlike previous console generations. For the first few years, a huge number of major releases were "cross-gen," meaning they launched on both PS4 and PS5. Titles like Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarök, and Elden Ring were all playable, and played by millions, on the PS4. This strategy kept the PS4 relevant and ensured its massive player base wasn't left behind overnight.

3. Affordability and Accessibility

A new PS5 is still a significant investment. In contrast, a pre-owned or even a new PS4 is incredibly affordable. This makes it the perfect entry point for new gamers, a fantastic secondary console for another room, or an ideal choice for families on a budget. The value proposition is off the charts; for a fraction of the cost of a new system, you get access to a decade's worth of legendary games.

4. The Digital Lock-In

Many long-time PlayStation fans have spent years building their digital game libraries on the PS4. These purchases are tied to their PSN account. While these games are playable on a PS5 through backward compatibility, there's less urgency to upgrade when your existing console still plays the hundreds or even thousands of dollars' worth of games you already own perfectly well.

The Road to Retro: When Does the PS4's Next Chapter Begin?

Here at Retro Broker, we're always thinking about a console's life cycle. The PS4 currently exists in a fascinating limbo—it's no longer the "current" generation, but it's far from being "retro." So, when will it make that jump?

A console typically enters retro territory when a few things happen:

1. It is two full generations behind the current hardware.
2. Developers have completely stopped making new games for it.
3. The manufacturer has ended official support and online services.

The PS4 isn't close to hitting these markers yet. It's in what we might call the "legacy" phase, much like the PlayStation 2 was during the height of the PS3 era. It's a reliable, affordable workhorse with an unbelievable software library that people will continue to discover and enjoy for years to come.

The true "retro" status for the PS4 will likely begin to set in around the time the PlayStation 6 is on the horizon. When that happens, the PS4 will be remembered not just for its sales numbers, but for its library of games that defined a generation. It will become a treasure trove for collectors and new gamers alike, a perfect time capsule of the 2010s gaming scene.

Conclusion: The King is Not Dethroned, But Sharing the Castle

So, how many people are still on PS4? The answer is tens of millions. It remains a vibrant, active, and essential part of the gaming world. Fueled by an unparalleled library, cross-gen support, and sheer affordability, the PS4's pulse is still beating strong.

It may not be the star of the show anymore, but it's the beloved and decorated legend that refuses to leave the stage. And for gamers, that's a wonderful thing. The PS4 isn't a retro console yet, but it has already cemented its place as a future classic.
