Grand Theft Auto for PlayStation 1 is a top-down open-world action game set across three cities. This listing is for the game disc only.
Players step into the role of a small-time criminal working up through the ranks of the criminal underworld. The action takes place across six levels divided among three distinct locations modeled after real US cities: Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City.
Viewed from a top-down perspective that zooms out at high driving speeds, the game allows free exploration across large urban maps. Progress requires reaching a target score in each level by stealing vehicles and completing missions received via payphones or specific cars. Dozens of vehicles with distinct handling are available, alongside hidden crates containing weapons, armor, and police bribes. Committing crimes in view of law enforcement raises the wanted level, which can be cleared by visiting a respray shop for a new paint job and license plates.
