The game focuses on authentic motorcycle physics, requiring players to manage braking, throttle control, positioning, and the rider's lean angle through corners. Arcade mode offers time trials, quick races against AI opponents, and split-screen multiplayer. In the main Tourist Trophy mode, players complete license tests to unlock challenges and races, winning new motorcycles directly from events without an in-game currency system.
Bikes can be tuned by adjusting tire compounds, brakes, suspension, gear ratios, and exhaust systems. Riders can also be customized with licensed gear and adjustable riding postures that directly affect handling. A built-in photo mode allows capturing action shots and saving them to a USB flash drive or printing via a compatible printer connected to the PlayStation 2.
