PS3 Super Slim: Why This Retro Console is Still Worth Buying | RetroBroker

      Published on 2/6/2025

The PS3 Super Slim: A Tiny Titan of Late-Gen Gaming (and Still Worth Buying!)

The PlayStation 3 had a long life. From its chunky, chrome-laden launch in 2006 to its eventual discontinuation in 2017, Sony's third home console saw multiple redesigns. But it's the final iteration, the PlayStation 3 Super Slim (CECH-4000 series), that often gets overlooked – and we think that's a mistake. Here at RetroBroker, we're all about appreciating every era of gaming, and the Super Slim deserves a spot in the retro hall of fame (or, you know, on your entertainment center).

Let's dive into why this little console is still worth picking up, even in a world dominated by PS5s and Xbox Series X/S.

More Than Just a Slimmer Package:

Yes, the Super Slim is, well, super slim. It's significantly smaller and lighter than both the original "fat" PS3 and the first slim model. This makes it incredibly portable and easy to fit into even the most crowded gaming setups. But the changes aren't just cosmetic. Here's a breakdown:

      • Top-Loading Disc Drive: This is the most noticeable difference. Instead of a slot-loading drive, the Super Slim features a manual sliding top cover. While some initially criticized it as feeling "cheap," it actually offers a practical advantage: fewer moving parts mean less chance of mechanical failure. Plus, there's a certain retro charm to manually swapping discs!
      • Reduced Power Consumption: The Super Slim is the most energy-efficient PS3 model. This means less heat, less noise, and a slightly smaller electricity bill.
      • Storage Options: The Super Slim was initially offered with either a 12GB flash memory model (which could be upgraded with a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive) or larger pre-installed hard drives (250GB or 500GB). This gives you flexibility depending on your budget and storage needs.
      • Reliability: While the original PS3 models were notorious for the "Yellow Light of Death" (YLOD), the Super Slim is generally considered the most reliable model. The redesigned architecture and improved cooling contribute to its increased longevity.

You might be thinking, "Isn't the PS3 ancient history?" Not at all! Here's why the Super Slim still holds its own:

      • A Massive Library of Games: The PS3 has one of the best game libraries of all time. From AAA exclusives like The Last of Us, Uncharted 2 & 3, God of War III, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Gran Turismo 5 & 6, to countless multi-platform gems, there's something for every type of gamer. And because these games are now considered "retro," you can often find them at fantastic prices!
      • Blu-ray Player: The PS3 was (and still is) a very capable Blu-ray player. If you still have a collection of Blu-ray movies, the Super Slim is a cost-effective way to enjoy them.
      • PlayStation Network (PSN) Access (Mostly): While some online services have been discontinued, you can still access the PlayStation Store to download digital games, demos, and other content. Many games still have active online communities, too.
      • Affordable Price: The Super Slim is generally the most affordable PS3 model on the used market. You can often find a console in good condition for a fraction of the price of newer systems.
      • Backwards Compatibility (with caveats!): It is very important to note before you make the decision to pick up any PS3 model. Only the original launch models of the PS3 are backwards compatible with PS2 Games. No Slim, and no Super Slims have this ability. All PS3 models are backwards compatible with original Playstation (PS1) games.

      Finding the Right Super Slim:

If you're sold on the Super Slim, here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping:

      • Hard Drive Size: Decide how much storage you'll need. If you plan on downloading a lot of digital games, opt for a model with a larger hard drive, or be prepared to upgrade the 12GB model.
      • Condition: As with any used console, check the condition carefully. Look for any signs of excessive wear and tear.
      • Included Accessories: Make sure the console comes with at least one DualShock 3 controller and the necessary cables (power and HDMI or AV).

      The Verdict:

The PS3 Super Slim is a fantastic little console that offers a huge library of amazing games, Blu-ray playback, and surprising reliability, all at an affordable price. It's a great entry point into the world of retro gaming, or a perfect addition to any established collection. It might not be the flashiest console, but it's a testament to Sony's engineering prowess and a reminder that great gaming experiences don't always come in the biggest packages.

So, if you're looking for a trip down memory lane, or want to experience some of the best games of the last generation, don't overlook the PS3 Super Slim. It's a tiny titan that's still packing a punch!
