Over time, UV light breaks down the bromine compounds, causing them to release bromine gas. This gas reacts with oxygen, resulting in the unsightly yellow discoloration.

Retrobrighting: A Deep Dive

Retrobrighting is a process that reverses this yellowing by using a chemical reaction to neutralize the bromine. It involves applying a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and a thickening agent (often hair developer cream) to the plastic, then exposing it to a UV light source. The UV light accelerates the reaction, breaking down the yellowed bromine compounds and restoring the plastic to its original color.

How to Retrobright:

Preparation: Thoroughly clean the plastic item with soap and water to remove any dirt or grime. Disassemble complex items if possible to treat individual plastic parts. Cover any areas you don't want to treat (labels, stickers, etc.) with tape.
Mixing the Solution: Combine the hydrogen peroxide and cream developer according to the instructions on the hydrogen peroxide bottle. Typically, a 10% to 12% hydrogen peroxide solution is recommended.
Application: Apply the mixture evenly to the yellowed plastic, ensuring complete coverage. Wrap the plastic in cling wrap to prevent the mixture from drying out.
UV Exposure: Place the wrapped plastic under a UV light source. Direct sunlight is the most economical option, but a UV lamp designed for retrobrighting provides more consistent results.
Monitoring and Reapplication: Check the plastic periodically. Reapply the mixture as needed if it dries out. The retrobrighting process can take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the severity of the yellowing and the strength of the UV source.

Salon Care 40: This hair developer cream often contains the required hydrogen peroxide, simplifying the process. Just apply it directly to the plastic and expose it to UV light.
Oxyclean or Other Oxygen Bleaches: Soaking plastic in a solution of oxygen bleach and water can sometimes lighten yellowing, but it's less effective than retrobrighting.
Painting: For severely damaged or stubborn yellowing, painting can be a viable option. Use a plastic-specific paint and primer for the best results.
