RGB vs Component vs Composite: Retro Console Cables Explained

Plugging a childhood console into a television only to be greeted by bleeding colours, fuzzy text, or a completely black screen is a rite of passage for European collectors. Understanding the differences in RGB vs Component vs Composite video signals is the single most effective way to transform your retro gaming picture quality without modifying your hardware. Here is exactly how analog video formats work in PAL territories, which retro console video cables you actually need, and how to avoid the wiring traps that damage vintage equipment.

The Analog Signal Hierarchy: RF, Composite, S-Video, Component, and RGB

Every vintage console generates its image internally before encoding it into an analog signal to send down a wire. The visual quality you see on screen depends entirely on how separated the brightness, colour, and synchronisation data remain during that journey.

At the bottom of the hierarchy sits RF (Radio Frequency) and Composite video (often labelled CVBS and carried over a single yellow RCA plug). Composite mashes Luminance (brightness), Chrominance (colour), and synchronisation pulses into a single copper wire. Because the television has to guess where brightness ends and colour begins, you get severe dot crawl, rainbow banding over high-contrast patterns like Sonic the Hedgehog's waterfalls, and blurry edges.

S-Video (Separate Video) takes a massive leap forward by splitting the signal into two dedicated pathways: Luminance (Y) and Chrominance (C), combined with ground lines inside a 4-pin mini-DIN plug. Because brightness and colour never touch inside the cable, S-Video eliminates dot crawl and drastically sharpens text and sprite edges. In Europe, S-Video retro gaming is crucial for consoles that lack native RGB output, most notably the PAL Nintendo 64.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is the native language of almost every 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit graphics processor. Instead of encoding the picture into a compressed format, an RGB cable sends the pure primary colour channels down three separate wires, accompanied by a dedicated fourth wire for sync. There is zero colour compression, delivering razor-sharp pixels and vibrant, accurate blocks of colour.

Component video (YPbPr), carried across Red, Green, and Blue RCA plugs, is a mathematically compressed version of RGB. It transmits Luminance (Y) on the green wire, the difference between Blue and Luma (Pb) on the blue wire, and the difference between Red and Luma (Pr) on the red wire. To the human eye, a well-calibrated Component signal equals RGB in sharpness, with one major generational advantage: standard RGB SCART maxes out at interlaced standard definition (480i/576i), whereas Component supports 480p progressive scan and higher HD resolutions.

Why European Gamers Won the Cable Lottery: The PAL SCART Advantage

Most online cable guides are written from a North American perspective, where Component was king on late-era CRT televisions and RGB required expensive professional studio monitors. European gamers, however, won the hardware lottery thanks to the mandatory standardisation of the 21-pin EuroSCART connector (Peritel) across PAL territories from the 1980s onward.

The catch is that SCART is just a plastic housing, not a signal type. A 21-pin SCART socket is designed to carry Composite, S-Video, or RGB depending on which internal pins are wired. When you plug standard yellow, white, and red RCA cables into those passive RCA-to-SCART adapter blocks included with the PlayStation 1 or Nintendo 64, you are still feeding dirty Composite video into Pin 20 of the SCART socket. To get true RGB, you need a fully wired PAL RGB SCART cable that populates Pins 15 (Red), 11 (Green), and 7 (Blue).

True RGB SCART cables also utilise two clever voltage-switching pins that automate your CRT television:

• Pin 8 (Status/Aspect Ratio): Outputs 9.5V–12V from the console to automatically wake the TV onto the AV channel in 4:3 aspect ratio, or 5V–8V to force a 16:9 widescreen squish.
• Pin 16 (Blanking Signal): Requires 1V–3V to force the television's internal video processor (the jungle chip) to ignore the Composite feed and switch directly into pure RGB mode.

If you are using a dual-SCART CRT television, always check the back panel markings. On almost all consumer sets from Sony, Philips, and Bang & Olufsen, only AV1 (EXT1) is wired for RGB. The second socket (AV2/EXT2) typically only accepts Composite and S-Video; plugging an RGB cable into AV2 will either give you a degraded Composite picture or a rolling black screen.

RGB vs Component vs Composite: Which Should You Actually Use?

When comparing RGB vs Component vs Composite, eliminating Composite is always your first step. Deciding between YPbPr Component vs RGB SCART, however, depends entirely on which generation of console you are connecting and what display you own.

For 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit consoles—such as the Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), PlayStation 1, and Sega Saturn—RGB SCART is the undisputed winner. These machines generate native 240p/288p RGB signals inside their video chips. Using a PAL RGB SCART cable provides a direct, uncompressed pipeline from the console's graphics processor to your CRT or scaler without needing any active conversion circuitry.

Furthermore, RGB completely bypasses a CRT television's PAL/NTSC colour decoder. If you plug an imported NTSC PlayStation 1 into an older European CRT using Composite, you will often get a black-and-white or flickery green picture because the TV cannot read the 3.58MHz NTSC colour burst. Feeding it an RGB signal solves this instantly, delivering full colour at 60Hz.

For sixth-generation hardware—specifically the PlayStation 2, Original Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube—the debate shifts toward Component. While these consoles look fantastic over RGB SCART on a standard-definition CRT, Component unlocks 480p progressive scan in supported games (and up to 720p/1080i on the Original Xbox), which is transformative on modern flat-panels and upscalers.

The PlayStation 2 requires special attention here because it shares the same pins on its AV Multi-Out port for both RGB and Component. You must manually toggle the output in the PS2 System Configuration menu between RGB and Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr. If you plug in an RGB SCART cable while the console is set to Component, the picture will have an overpowering green tint; if you plug in a Component cable while the console is set to RGB, you will get no signal at all.

Sync Signals Demystified: Composite Video, Sync-on-Luma, and C-Sync

An RGB cable only sends colour data on three wires; it requires a fourth signal—synchronisation (Sync)—wired to SCART Pin 20 so the television's electron gun knows where each horizontal line and vertical frame begins. When shopping for high-end retro console video cables, you will encounter three ways of wiring this sync line: Sync-on-Composite, Sync-on-Luma, and pure C-Sync.

Sync-on-Composite (CVBS Sync) is the standard method used in official first-party cables. It simply feeds the standard yellow Composite video signal into Pin 20, and the TV strips the sync data out of it. The downside is that Composite video carries high-frequency colour and brightness data. In poorly shielded cables, this signal bleeds across into the adjacent RGB wires, creating a faint diagonal checkerboard pattern over solid colours.

Sync-on-Luma is the golden sweet spot for consoles that support S-Video, including the SNES, PlayStation 1, and PlayStation 2. Instead of using the full Composite signal, the cable pulls sync from the S-Video Luminance (brightness) pin. Because the Luma pin contains zero colour subcarrier data, checkerboard interference is completely eliminated, and the voltage is 100% safe for all consumer CRTs and modern scalers.

Pure C-Sync (Composite Sync) contains nothing but raw horizontal and vertical timing pulses. It is essential for professional studio monitors (like the Sony PVM series) and Extron matrix switches, and is the only clean option for consoles that do not output S-Video, such as the Sega Mega Drive. However, you must be careful when comparing sync on luma vs csync: many consoles output raw C-Sync at 5V TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) levels. Consumer SCART televisions expect a 75-ohm video-level signal (around 0.3V–1V). A proper C-Sync SCART cable must have a 470-ohm resistor soldered inside the connector hood to drop that voltage down, otherwise raw TTL C-Sync will damage your TV or scaler over time.

Console-Specific Cable Traps in PAL Territories

The biggest mistake European collectors make is assuming that if a plug fits into a console's AV port, the cable is safe to use. Hardware manufacturers frequently altered the electrical components inside the console across different regions and revisions, shifting the burden onto passive components hidden inside the SCART plug itself.

Nowhere is the NTSC vs PAL Nintendo Multi-Out trap more dangerous than across the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and GameCube. All three consoles share the exact same 12-pin physical AV port, yet they require completely different internal SCART wiring:

• PAL SNES (SNSP-001A): Outputs 12V DC on Pin 3 (where NTSC consoles output C-Sync) and requires 75-ohm resistors to ground on the RGB lines inside the SCART head to bring the brightness down to legal television levels.
• NTSC SNES & PAL GameCube (DOL-001): Require 220uF capacitors in series on the RGB lines to filter out DC voltage offsets. Using a GameCube or NTSC SNES cable on a PAL SNES causes the image to look blindingly over-exposed or slowly fade to black as the capacitors overcharge.
• PAL Nintendo 64 (NUS-001 EUR): Nintendo completely stripped the RGB components from the motherboard of all PAL N64 consoles. Plugging any RGB SCART cable into an unmodded PAL N64 gives you a black screen with audio. Instead, you must use a dedicated PAL N64 S-Video cable (which also requires specific resistors in the plug for early French and European board revisions to prevent an overly bright picture).
• PAL GameCube Advantage: Unlike American and Japanese GameCubes, which only support high-end video via the expensive Digital AV port on early DOL-001 models, all PAL GameCubes (both DOL-001 and the later DOL-101) output native analog RGB SCART directly from the standard Multi-Out port.

Sega consoles have their own quirks. The Sega Mega Drive Model 1 uses a large 8-pin circular DIN socket on the back, which only outputs mono audio. While the Sega Mega Drive Model 2 switched to a compact 9-pin mini-DIN that carries full stereo alongside RGB, Model 1 owners must buy an RGB SCART cable fitted with an additional 3.5mm stereo jack lead that plugs into the front headphone port of the console to get proper left and right audio channels on their TV.

Spotting Cheap Knock-Off Cables vs Proper Coaxial Shielded Cables

When evaluating RGB vs Component vs Composite, cable build quality matters just as much as the signal format. Flooding online marketplaces are generic €5 black PVC SCART cables produced in the same factories with identical external moulds. Inside these budget cables are paper-thin copper strands bundled tightly together inside a single, flimsy foil wrap—or worse, with no shielding at all.

When high-frequency video signals (especially Sync-on-Composite) travel parallel to unshielded left and right audio wires, electromagnetic crosstalk occurs. The result is a loud 50Hz or 60Hz audio buzz coming through your speakers that gets noticeably louder whenever the game displays a bright white screen, alongside diagonal interference lines crawling across the video.

A genuine high-grade RGB cable uses 75-ohm individually shielded coaxial wires inside a thicker outer jacket. Each Red, Green, Blue, Sync, and Audio wire is wrapped in its own dedicated copper braid or foil ground shield, completely isolating the signals from one another and delivering silent audio and rock-steady pixels.

If you have an existing SCART cable in a drawer and want to check its quality, simply unscrew the plastic collar at the base of the 21-pin SCART head and pop the two halves of the shell apart:

1. Inspect the individual wires: If you see a rainbow of ultra-thin single wires soldered directly to the pins with only one bare ground wire connected to Pin 4 or Pin 17, it is an unshielded budget cable. Look for thicker internal wires where each has its own outer ground sleeve soldered to the corresponding return pins (Pins 5, 9, 13, and 17).
2. Check for passive components: A proper PlayStation 1 or GameCube SCART plug should have three cylindrical 220uF electrolytic capacitors (or tiny rectangular surface-mount ceramic equivalents) soldered onto Pins 7, 11, and 15, plus a resistor bridging Pin 8 and Pin 16 to step down the voltage for RGB blanking.
3. Verify Pin 16 wiring: Cheap adapters often leave Pin 16 disconnected, meaning the cable is secretly feeding Composite video down Pin 20 while leaving the RGB pins dead.

Retro Gaming on a Modern TV

If you are connecting your consoles to a modern 4K OLED or QLED television that lacks analog ports, avoid the cheap €10 black plastic "SCART to HDMI" converter boxes sold online. First, many of these boxes only read the Composite pin inside the SCART socket, throwing away your RGB signal entirely. Second, they misinterpret classic 240p/288p retro signals as 480i/576i interlaced video, introducing massive input lag (often 4 to 6 frames), smeared motion, and broken flickering drop-shadows.

To experience true RGB SCART or Component quality for retro gaming on a modern TV, pair your shielded cables with a dedicated zero-lag gaming scaler designed for 240p signals, such as the Open Source Scan Converter (OSSC), the RetroTINK family of scalers, or a RAD2X cable.

FAQ

Can I use a GameCube RGB SCART cable on a PAL SNES?

No. While the Nintendo Multi-Out connector fits physically into both consoles, the PAL SNES requires 75-ohm pull-down resistors to ground inside the SCART hood, whereas the PAL GameCube requires 220uF capacitors. Swapping them will result in an extremely washed-out, fading, or dark rolling picture.

Why does my PS2 have a green screen when using an RGB SCART cable?

The PlayStation 2 outputs a green screen over RGB in two scenarios: when playing a DVD movie (due to Macrovision copy protection blocking RGB DVD playback), or when the console's internal menu is set to Component (Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr) instead of RGB. Boot the PS2 without a disc, enter System Configuration, and toggle Component Video Out to RGB.

Does the PAL N64 work with RGB SCART cables?

No, unmodded PAL Nintendo 64 consoles do not have the internal circuitry wired to output an RGB signal from the Multi-Out port. For an unmodified PAL N64, the highest quality analog signal available is S-Video using a properly attenuated PAL S-Video cable.

Why is there a loud buzzing sound when my retro console shows a bright white screen?

This audio hum happens when you use a cheap, unshielded SCART cable where the higher-voltage video lines bleed electromagnetic interference directly into the adjacent left and right audio wires. Upgrading to a fully shielded coaxial RGB SCART cable isolates the audio channels and eliminates the buzz completely.

Conclusion

Getting the best image out of your vintage hardware does not require soldering irons or invasive HDMI modifications—it simply requires matching the right analog cable to your console's native output. Stick to properly shielded RGB vs Component vs Composite setups: use Sync-on-Luma or attenuated C-Sync RGB SCART for your 8-bit to 32-bit PAL machines, switch to S-Video for an unmodded PAL Nintendo 64, and step up to YPbPr Component when you want 480p progressive scan out of your PlayStation 2 or Original Xbox.
