The game takes place in a remote nuclear missile disposal facility on a remote Alaskan island, seven years after the events of its predecessor, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The player controls Solid Snake, a soldier sent to infiltrate the facility and neutralize a terrorist threat led by Colonel Roy Campbell. Campbell and most of his team have been captured by the terrorists who are headed by former FOXHOUND operative Liquid Snake—the twin brother of Solid. Snake must traverse the facility's different areas and rescue the hostages while gathering keycards and other items to reach Liquid and foil his plans.

The gameplay of Metal Gear Solid involves stealth and action elements. The player must avoid being detected by enemy guards and use weapons and other items to complete their objectives. The game's most innovative feature is the ability to hide Snake's body against walls and other objects, which allows him to avoid detection more easily. The player can also use a variety of weapons and items, including handguns, assault rifles, and grenades, to engage in combat with the enemy. Metal Gear Solid also features a complex story with multiple endings, depending on the player's actions throughout the game.
