Can PS3 play PS1 and PS2 games? A compatibility guide
Check the model
PlayStation 3 compatibility depends on the exact model and the format of the game. Check the model code and its regional documentation before buying a console for your collection.
Original PlayStation discs
Many PS3 models can play original PlayStation discs, but not every title is guaranteed to work. Check the game and console region and, when possible, the specific title.

Only certain early original “Fat” PS3 models support PS2 discs. Compatibility varies by model and game; hard-drive capacity alone does not reliably identify the model. Many later Fat models and Slim systems do not play PS2 discs. Sony’s manual for CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B explicitly excludes PS2 software.
Digital games
Some PS1 and PS2 classics have been sold digitally. Availability depends on the region, account and current PlayStation Store service. A digital release does not mean a console can read the original disc.
Before buying
Check the exact model code, the game and region, the console’s condition and any accessories or maintenance needed. Even on compatible models, some games may have issues.
