Do Switch games work on Switch 2?

Will my Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?

If you have a collection of Nintendo Switch games, you may want to keep playing them on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo says the newer console can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Switch. Some titles are not supported or are not fully compatible, so check the current information for the specific game before buying or transferring it.

Digital games and your Nintendo Account

You can link a Nintendo Account to a user profile on Switch 2 and use compatible downloadable software and virtual game cards. Nintendo also provides a system-transfer process for profiles, linked accounts, games and certain save data. Follow the current transfer instructions and check the requirements for the games and saves you want to move; the availability and licensing of digital content can vary.

Updates and enhanced editions

Some original Switch games receive free updates, while selected titles offer paid upgrades to a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Improvements and additional features depend on the game. Do not assume every older game automatically runs at a higher resolution or frame rate: check the publisher's information for that title.

A look at earlier consoles

Nintendo has supported backward compatibility on some previous systems. For example, Nintendo says Wii U can play nearly all Wii games and use many Wii accessories through Wii Mode. Compatibility has never been identical across every generation, however, so the rules for one console do not establish support on another.

Before you switch consoles

Check the exact game and edition, Nintendo's compatibility notes, any required controllers or updates, and the instructions for transferring accounts and save data. Keep your original console and data until you have verified that the transfer and your important saves are complete. Nintendo's support pages are the best place to check for changes after this article was prepared.
