Specter, a popular attraction at the amusement park, has been transformed from a gentle monkey into a scheming chief thanks to the power of the Peak Point Intelligence-Boosting Helmet. Now, he and his army of monkeys have hijacked the Professor's time machine to go back in time and replace human civilization with a monkey society. There's only one catch: Spike has also been caught in the time machine and sent back in time with them. With the help of the Professor's numerous gadgets, Spike will travel through prehistoric lands and capture Specter's army to prevent his sinister plan.

Due to the game's requirement to use a Dual Shock controller, all of Spike's items are controlled using the right analog stick. Examples include the stun club, which can be waved in any direction or rotated in circles, a remote-controlled car that can drive alongside Spike as he runs, and a helicopter rotor that can be quickly rotated to lift Spike or slow his descent. The goal on each level is to capture enough of Specter's monkeys to reduce their impact on history. Each monkey has different stats and personalities. Some will barely notice you and prefer to laze around or sleep, while others will attack you with machine guns, rocket launchers, and UFOs. The weapon will only stun the monkey, and you have to capture it with the Time Net.

Finding all the monkeys on a level will unlock a time attack mode for that level, and collecting Specter Coins hidden on the levels will unlock bonus games like boxing and skiing that use the two analog stick controls.
